So about halfway through last week, I determined my initial concept to be too complicated and beyond my current knowledge. Had I realised this a lot sooner I probably would have endeavored to push through with my first idea.

So after days of stressing about grasping certain concepts, I had identified for myself a need. I decided to develop a mashup that could be used in conjunction with this unit called, KIB204 - A basic Survival Kit.

I still liked the visual design however , so I had attemtped to stick with that to an extent.

So this Concept was to draw upon multiple sources, but using a much simpler and realistic method for me at this point in time. There are four different functions of this mashup:

1) Allows the user to do a nine msn search regarding tutorials and general information on web languages.

2) Allows the user to search for tutorial videos on youtube

3) Uses feeds from bestwebgallery.com to bring the users web design inspiration.

4) Uses feeds from Colour lovers to provide the user with both the top ten and latest colour palettes created.

Using pipes and searching blog post content

So lately I’ve been having a bit of trouble using pipes to pull the artist name from the posts because each blog formats their posts a little differently. I also needed to sort out a way to consistently draw the genre information from each post in order for the first and foremost function (to search latest blogposts by genre). So the best way I was able to achieve this was to customise the was Yahoo Pipes searched each blog post. I used a compilation of different rules in the filter operator which would use the users text input to search different parts of the blog posts depending on which blog would present results. For example I used filter “item.category” when searching www.mahoganyblog.com and the users input would search “item.description” when searching www.pitchfork.com.

For those of us using el.bows:

Unlike the majority of this site, the “Hot Posts” source actually has it’s own RSS feed. Thus it aggregates several blogs for me, and provides more results that feedburner and feedity do.

However, sense of accomplishment aside, I think this solution has been right there all along and very obvious. How daft of me.
